Why do we give gifts?

It’s not all about the three wise men, you know. Although Christians see gift-giving as continuing the practice started by the Magi, who brought gold, frankincense and myrrh to the baby Jesus, it’s actually a pagan tradition. It dates back to ancient Rome, when the winter solstice was celebrated by giving gifts on December’s Saturnalia holiday, to honour the god Saturn. 

Of course, the man with the most gifts of all, Santa Claus, is descended from a famous Christian figure.

I think that we give gifts because it is better to give than to receive. We buy gifts not to spend our money but to show concern for others.
